Primeros Pasos

Primeros Pasos is a multi-sensory, direct instruction, supplemental reading program for children who struggle with reading in Spanish as it is presented in the general education classroom.

Primeros Pasos meets the criteria for effective instruction for struggling readers:

• Simultaneous, multi-sensory instruction
• Intense instruction with ample practice
• Direct, explicit instruction
• Systematic and cumulative presentation
• Synthetic and analytic learning experiences
• Diagnostic teaching

The first lesson introduces two consonants and two vowels. Thereafter, only one new sound is introduced in each lesson and ample practice and review of previously mastered sounds is provided. Students are given opportunities to say, see, hear, “feel” and write the new sounds and the syllables and words they form. The first book introduces all of the single grapheme letters of the Spanish alphabet. The second book (in production) covers the dual grapheme letters (ch, ll), ñ, the blends and the vowel diphthongs.

Primeros Pasos was developed by a bilingual special education teacher to meet the needs of her students. It has been used extensively in the author’s school district and has been successful in bringing many struggling readers up to grade level expectations by providing daily small group support in a sequential program of instruction.
